HEAR OUR VOICE

A music project giving voice to the silenced

But anyway, I still believe I only sleep today,
That I'll wake up, a child again, and start to laugh and play.

Hanus Hachenburg was 13 when he was deported to Terezín. Whilst in the ghetto, he produced a wealth of extraordinary poetry. His voice was silenced in Auschwitz on December 18, 1943.

Hear Our Voice is a new commission by leading composers Jonathan Dove and Matthew King, set to a libretto compiled by Tertia Sefton-Green of children’s Holocaust writings. The piece was devised through workshops with young people and is the culmination of a unique music education project, which developed a new way of teaching the Holocaust through the Arts in three countries. The scene is set by a new film by award winning filmmaker Marta Hrubá, who worked the students in Prague. Performances will also take place at the Fürth Stadttheater in Nuremberk and the Bloomsbury Theatre in London.

Exhibition of artworks in the Jubilee Synagogue
, Jeruzalémská 7, Prague 1
From June 20 till July 23 2006, open daily 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. except Saturdays

A performance of Hear Our Voice at the Prague State Opera is accompanied by an exhibition of artworks by students from Prague, London and Nuremberg. This project uses art to increase young people's awareness and understanding of the dangers of prejudice and persecution and to encourage them to express their feelings about current issues of racial hatred and intolerance. The exhibition presents the artworks of students from five Prague schools – Gymnázium Nad Alejí, Gymnázium na Pražačce, the Religious School of Don Bosco, the Lauder Jewish Community Schools and the Elementary School of Graphic Arts – who have participated in art workshops on the topic of the Holocaust under the supervision of the artist Hana Pavlátová. Together with artworks by students from London and Nuremberg, their works are on display in the Jubilee Synagogue from June 20 till July 23, 2006.
