Pot Coaster from the Terzín Ghetto
beech wood, ink drawing with aniline colouring, Terezín, early 1945
Height 210 mm, width 183 mm
Inv. No. ŽMP 179.071

This heart-shaped coaster is decorated with ink-drawn floral motifs, figures and objects relating to life in the Terezín ghetto. It was made for Jolana Richterová (1907-1979) as a present for her daughter Věra. As she was in a mixed marriage, Jolana was not interned in Terezín until January 1945; her then ten-year-old daughter remained alone and had to rely on the help of friends until the end of the war. Jolana’s husband was incarcerated in Bernau since the end of 1943, as he had refused to divorce his Jewish wife. Considering the inscription – “Dear Věra, it will soon just be a shadow, a memory of Terezín.” – Jolana gave her daughter this coaster on her return home on 10 May 1945.
