OBJECT OF THE MONTH – November 2005

Salomon Hugo Lieben
(28 April 1881, Prague – 20 November 1942, Prague)

To mark the anniversary of the death of Salomon Hugo Lieben, the item we have selected from our collections this month is an object once owned by this distinguished Hebraist and historian. The motif depicted on the ceramic tile symbolically illustrates Lieben’s main areas of specialist interest: he published a number of studies on the history of Bohemian and Moravian Jews, focusing mainly on manuscripts and printed books. Lieben became associated with the history of Jewish Prague, however, mainly as the founder and long-term employee of the Jewish Museum in Prague, which will be celebrating its centenary in 2006. He was also actively involved in the leadership of Prague’s Jewish community and in the burial society. Together with his family, he attended Liebens’ and Jeiteles’ private house of prayer in Josefovská Street (now Široká). Lieben died in Prague, before being deported to the Terezín ghetto.
