The sheer volume of the collections places high demands on the activity of the Museum's restoration workplaces. At present, the Museum has three permanent restoration workplaces: a metal restoration workshop, a textile workshop and a paper and parchment workshop. A team of six restoration experts employed in the workshops devote intensive care to collections which have suffered neglect for decades. Their objective is to achieve an optimum state of conservation for all the collection items within the shortest possible time frame. In view of the time-consuming nature of such a task, the Museum's restoration staff also use the services of external collaborators, especially with respect to the restoration of objects for individual loans or extensive exhibition projects. A systematic restoration of the painting collection is also taking place on the basis of external collaboration.
