A new issue of the journal Judaica Bohemiae (47/2012, 1) came out at the beginning of July 2012. This volume includes a study by Marie Malivánková Wasková on the development and gradual demise of the medieval Jewish community in Pilsen. On the basis of a thorough analysis and a combination of all the extant sources, this study corrects mistakes made in the earlier literature and brings new interesting information. It is followed by a paper by Peter Kónya examining the origin of the Jewish community in Prešov and the forming of relations between the Jews of Prešov and the town’s inhabitants. In the next paper, Adam Dobeš explores the historical background to the little known anti-Jewish incidents in the southern Bohemian towns of Jindřichův Hradec (Neuhaus) and Nová Bystřice (Neubistritz) that occurred in 1859 in connection with Second War of Italian Independence. The final paper, by Andrea Jelínková, focuses on the war-time and post-war fate of the Terezín books – books that were part of the Central Library of the Terezín Ghetto and the large Terezín collection of Hebraica and Judaica looted by the Nazis in various libraries and institutions in occupied Europe.

In the reports section, Martin Jelínek presents the neZnámí (unKnown) project, whose aim was to identify as yet unknown persons who appear on several hundred portrait photographs from 1942-44 that are kept in the Photo Archive of the Jewish Museum in Prague. The volume also includes a review by Pavel Sládek of David B. Ruderman’s book Early Modern Jewry. A New Cultural History (2010), a review by Ivo Cerman of Arno Herzig’s book Das Interesse an den Juden in der frühen Neuzeit. Studien zur Kontinuität und zum Wandel des Judenbildes (2012) and a review by Martha Keil of Beer Sheva by Beer and Bella Perlhefter. An Edition of a Seventeenth Century Yiddish Encyclopaedia (edited by Nathanael Riemer and Sigrid Senkbeil, 2011).

Published since 1965 by the Jewish Museum in Prague, Judaica Bohemiae focuses on Jewish history and culture in Bohemia, Moravia and the wider Central European area (the territory of the former Habsburg Monarchy). The texts are in English and German.

A new issue of the journal Judaica Bohemiae (47/2012, 2) came out at the end of December 2012. This volume includes a study by Marie Buňatová on commercial relations between the Jews of Prague and Krakow in the period before the Battle of White Mountain. On the basis of a thorough analysis of sources from Czech and Polish archives, this study uncovers the operation, form and development of Czech-Polish trade in the 16th century, as well as the key role played therein by Jews. Ivo Cerman’s paper deals with the almost forgotten work Jüdischer Blut-Eckel (1753) by Alois von Sonnenfels – a Jewish convert and father of the famous representative of the Austrian Enlightenment, Joseph von Sonnenfels – which was written in defence of Jews for the purpose of disproving allegations that they used Christian blood. In the Documents section, Alexandr Putík presents and analyzes in detail a new source relating to the trial of Yom-Tov Lipmann Heller from 1629–1630, and Jitka Korbelová provides information about the so-called Schulfassionen – an important, hitherto little-explored source relating to the history of Jewish education in Moravia.
The Reports section contains an article by Jaroslav Kuntoš about the unique archaeological find of a medieval signet ring with a Hebrew inscription, which was uncovered in Prague’s Republic Square (náměstí Republiky) eight years ago. Dana Veselská provides information about a project focused on identifying the donors of objects in the collections of the Jewish Museum In Prague, Pavel Sládek reports on the first year in existence of the Prague Centre for Jewish Studies, and Arno Pařík covers a recent exhibition on the early work of Georges Kars, which was held at the museum’s Robert Gutmann Gallery. The volume also includes reviews of Pavla Damohorská’s The Jewish Prayer for the Welfare of the Country as the Echo of Political and Historical Changes in Central Europe (2010, reviewed by Meir M.
