My Heart is a Jazz Band

Released by the Jewish Museum in an ongoing association with the record collector Gabriel Gössel, this CD features a Jewish musician’s rare recordings from 1927 to 1938 – Dol Dauber and his orchestras. Dol Dauber was a hugely talented and versatile musician-conductor. The CD is named after the title of the first track, My Heart is a Jazz Band. These days, Dol Dauber (b. 1894 in Bukovina, Romania – d. 1950 in Prague), whose 110th anniversary is being celebrated this year, is a household name only for the older generation. Nevertheless, his name will shine forever in the annals of music – particularly of popular music. This Jewish composer, arranger and influential interpreter of popular music, writer of songs, operettas and film scores, jazz pioneer and wonderfully gifted violinist, went through periods of fame and of steep decline in his relatively short life. After a classical education he began to focus on jazz and came to direct various salon orchestras and swing bands with which he enjoyed great success. This CD includes 23 pieces performed in 1927–1938 in Berlin and Prague. The music is very broad in range and also comprises several titles composed by Dol Dauber himself, such as songs from the film Hearth Without Fire performed by Hana Vítová and R. A. Dvorský.
