Democratization of Religion, Democratization of the Society

Prague

09. 10. 2018 19:00

Maisel Synagogue, Maiselova 10, Praha 1

The emergence and development of modern democratic values involved their emancipation from religion – in western societies, primarily from Christianity and Judaism. Religions in western society often adopt a democratic ethos and also help to shape it through their limited influence. But to what extent has this ethos imprinted itself on the structures of thought and the functioning of religious communities? Can religion be an agent of democracy even if it embodies principles that are inconsistent with democratic values? Or is religion an area of human experience where questions such as gender equality, authority or the functioning of institutions should be governed by other rules? A debate featuring William Cook (The State University in New York, USA) and Paul Cliteur (Leiden University, Netherlands). Moderated by Professor Pavel Hošek (Charles University, CZ). Part of the Festival of Democracy within the Forum 2000 Conference. In English. Limited capacity - reservation necessary at education@jewishmuseum.cz. Free admission.
