Should We Get Packing? The Decline of Liberal Democracy and Rise of Antisemitism in Central Europe

Anti-Semitism in Central Europe, somehow dormant for decades, is yet again back in the public sphere. In Hungary, Poland, but also in Slovakia, anti-Semitic motifs are used as an expedient tool in a search of a scapegoat who could be blamed for real, as well as, alleged domestic problems. Is a rising anti-Semitism a concomitant effect of the growing illiberalism? Will the Jews be yet again seen as ‘the Other’, as not part of the nation? Political leaders condoning anti-Semitism often keep very warm relations with Israel. How should a combination of anti-Semitism and pro-Zionism be explained? A debate featuring Shlomo Avineri (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, IL), Irena Kalhousová (LSE, UK), Konstanty Gebert (journalist, PL), and Martin Poliačik (politician, educator, SK).
