A lecture on the life and work of the Berlin Slavist and philosopher Leopold Silberstein (1900-1941), given by the Berlin-based Orientalist and historian Konrád Hermann. In the 1930s, Silberstein significantly contributed to the cultural and intellectual life in Prague, where he found refuge from the Nazi terror in March 1933. In connection with his academic work, Silberstein became an active member of the famous Prague Linguistic Circle and also focused on the history and literature of Czechoslovakia, Poland and Russia. Under the authority of the Czechoslovak government, he lectured at the University of Tartu, Estonia, from 1936. He fell victim to Nazi persecution there in 1941. This lecture is being held in association with the Prague Literature House of German-Language Authors. It will be in German with simultaneous translation into Czech. Free admission.
