From Antijudaism to Antisemitism, and Back Again? KOPIE

Prague

13. 04. 2016 18:00

Auditorium OVK ŽMP, Maiselova 15, 3. floor

A lecture by the U.S. historian Steven Englund (Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung, Berlin), based on his long-term research into antisemitic movements in Germany, Austria-Hungary and France between 1800 and 1914. This lecture seeks to show that socially repressive behaviour towards Jews cannot be explained solely by referring to social, economic, political, cultural and racial factors, which is currently the prevalent view in the study of antisemitism. An approach that consistently excludes the religion-based sociological imagination cannot explain the violence, irrationality and emotional weight of acts stemming from antisemitism. An adequate historical explanation must systematically take into account conscious, but mainly unconscious, age-old religious factors. The lecture will be in English as part of a loosely connected series on the history of antisemitism. Free admission.
