Purim rattle

A rattle used in the course of the holiday of Purim during the public reading of the Scroll of Esther*. It serves to drown out the name of the evil Haman whenever it is mentioned. In the Czech lands, the rattle and clapper are usually made of wood. Neither the rattle with toothed edges nor the clapper with tilting hammer differ in shape from that of more commonly used noise makers. Their association with Purim, therefore, is possible only if they are provided with an identificatory inscription or ornamentation relating to this holiday.
