Havdalah candelabrum

A holder for the Havdalah candle. The structure of the candelabrum makes it possible to regulate the height of the candle and to make it stable during use. With the most common type, a circular base supports four rods that are connected above by a ring; among them is placed a sliding sheath around the candle. Other structural arrangements enabling the height of the candle to be regulated may also be used. Candelabra which are combined with the ritual spice box* and which have a container for spices at the base – most frequently in the shape of a small drawer – occur only rarely. The Havdalah candelabrum is usually made of silver and its height is about 20 centimetres. A candle braided together from several (at least four) thin streaks of wax is placed in the candelabrum. The means of braiding may vary, the most frequent being to arrange the streaks in the shape of flat bands. The individual streaks are usually differentiated by colour, and the candle is 4 to 6 centimetres wide.
