Glossary

The entries selection comes from the book “Dictionary of Judaica” (2005), which was written by a group of authors led by Eva Kosáková . Entries were further processed by Jaroslav Kuntoš, Dana Veselská, Olga Sixtová, Michaela Scheibová and Lenka Uličná. The book can be purchased at our e-shop.

Shabbat candelabra

A pair of candelabra that are lit before the beginning of the Shabbat. Apart from the requirement to light at least two lights, their shape is not prescribed in any way, hence it is possible to use any suitable candelabra. Separate multi-branched candelabra with a least two candles lit have also been used as Shabbat candelabra. Ornate candelabra have are made of silver, simple candelabra of copper, copper alloy or other metals. Shabbat candelabra usually do not differ in shape from candelabra for ordinary use and cannot be identified without inscriptions or ornamentation.
