Large Tallit (Heb. tallit gadol)

A rectangular prayer shawl, normally made of wool or silk, that is white or cream in colour and has characteristic woven dark stripes, an atarah sewn on the top and long tzitziot attached to each corner. It is worn during prayers in the synagogue by males over the age of 13; in the Ashkenazi area it is usually worn only by married men. The minimum size of the tallit is prescribed by religious law (Heb. Halakhah). The tallit is a popular gift for bar mitzvahs and weddings; in some areas, it is used to cover the heads of the bride and groom during the wedding ceremony. It is customary for a person to be buried in his tallit with one of the fringes cut, which renders it unfit for ritual use.
