Rosh ha-Shanah (New Year)

A holiday celebrated on the first and second days of Tishri. It begins the ten-day period of repentance, known as the High Holidays, which culminates in Yom Kippur. On this day, God passes judgement on all people and decides who will be inscribed in the Book of Life and who in the Book of Death. According to tradition, the creation of the world occurred on this day. The synagogue liturgy is marked by the blowing of the shofar, the wearing of white garments and the use of white textiles. It is customary to dip bread and fruit in honey, which represents the wish for a sweet year.
