Pesah (Passover)

A pilgrimage holiday, falling between 15-22 Nisan, which commemorates the Exodus of the Israeli nation from Egypt and the path from slavery to freedom. It is celebrated for eight days, the first two evenings marked by the festive Seder meal at which the Haggadah is recited and special food is eaten. The name of the holiday is derived from the saving of the first-born of Israel from the Tenth Plaque on Egypt whom God “passed over” (pasah), and from the sacrificial lamb (korban Pesah) which is connected with this event. The consumption of leavened products (hametz) is forbidden throughout Pesah; all traces of such food must be removed from the home before the holiday begins. Specially baked unleavened bread (matzot) is eaten instead, from which is derived another name for the holiday, Chag ha-matzot The Song of Songs is recited during the Shabbat service.
