Sukkot (Feast of Booths)

One of the pilgrimage holidays, which falls between 15 and 22 Tishri and celebrates the dwelling in tents in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt. On each day during this festival, the faithful spend time in a pre-built Sukkah. It is also known as Chag ha-Asif (the Feast of Ingathering); in ancient times, pilgrimages were made at this time with offerings to the Temple of Jerusalem. The liturgy is characterized by the use of four species of plants (arba’ah minim) – etrog, lulav, hadas and arava. The celebrations include a reading from the Book of Ecclesiastes. The seventh day of the holiday is Hoshana Rabbah, which is when the congregants circle the bimah seven times with the four plant species in hand. The following day constitutes a separate holiday, known as Shimini Atzeret (Eighth Day of Gathering), when a prayer for rain is recited.
