Synagogue clock

A clock hung in a prominent place in the synagogue vestibule. Its function is to inform synagogue attenders of public prayer times, which vary in the course of the year and depend on whether it is a weekday, Shabbat or Jewish holiday. Usually, it comprises six to nine clock dials with hands that indicate the specific times of morning, afternoon and evening prayers. For more ornate clocks, the dials contain inscriptions and are enclosed in a flat glass cabinet which is embellished with carving, painting or gilt. Sometimes, a clock that tells the actual time is also placed in the cabinet. For clocks with simple designs, dials can only be painted on a hanging pasteboard with riveted hands.
