Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement)

The final and most important day of the ten-day period of repentence. It occurs on 10 Tishri, when it is finally decided who will not be sealed in the Book of Life, having not repented or become reconciled to God. Yom Kippur is accompanied by a number of restrictions which are the most stringent of all the holidays. A fast is held from the beginning of the day, i.e., from nightfall, work is prohibited, as it is during the Shabbat, and it is forbidden to wash one’s body, to use cosmetics, to have marital relations and to wear leather footwear. The liturgy includes a number of special prayers with confessions of sins and supplications for forgiveness the day ends with the blowing of the shofar.
