The Central Jewish Museum (Jüdisches Zentralmuseum) began its work in August 1942 with the aim of bringing together Jewish memorial items from the disbanded Jewish communities in Bohemia and Moravia. The museum also received shipments of selected items from the Prague-based Treuhandstelle, which sorted the property of Jewish deportees. One of the books that came to the museum is this richly illustrated two-volume edition of the Holy Scripture, which contains a translation by Martin Luther (published by Verlag der Goldenen Klassiker-Bibel und Max Herzig, Wien [1894], Prachtausgabe).

At the Central Jewish Museum, the book was given registration number 94085/1 and was catalogued on 23rd October 1944 by Dr. Tobias Jakobovits, the specialist head of the museum and librarian of the Prague Jewish Community’s pre-war library. Just four days later, on 27th October 1944, Jakobovits was deported to Auschwitz, where he was murdered. This year marks the 120th anniversary of his birth.
